OUR STORY: Finding the "Naturally Good" Alternative fertilizer by Mike & Jenny Slabber
As exporters and entrepreneurs we were alerted to an interesting opportunity by an enquiry from Germany for the supply of organic fertilizers. We grew up on farms in South Africa, and with our combined experience in the retail food and animal feed industry we realized that conservation farming practises and using organic methods would be the answer to sustainable production of healthy food and a healthy environment for the rapidly growing world population.
So in the early 1990’s, long before it was trendy, we began to investigate production of organic fertilizers as natural alternatives to synthetic fertilizer, particularly as European laws were restricting the use of synthetic agro-chemicals due to environmental pollution and degradation of vital ecosystems such as soil, water and air.
We saw the potential, so work on a new business began in 1993 which resulted in a commercially viable range of balanced, high nutrient organic fertilizers. Talborne Organics launched the VITA Organic Fertilizer range in March 2000 and achieved organic input approval and certification to both North American and European Community Organic Standards. This meant that SA Certified Organic farmers who use Talborne Organic Fertilizers can export to Europe and the USA under the Certified Organic label.
Mike Slabber, MD of Talborne Organics, says we are fortunate to be involved in this dynamic growth sector where the health and environmentally conscious consumer demands safe, sustainable quality produce. From an initial growth rate of an estimated 35% per year in the early 2000’s in the international Organics Industry, "Growth Continues: Global Organic market at 72 Billion USD with 43 Million Hectares of organic agricultural land worldwide" and "significant market growth of 11.5% in the US, the world’s largest organic market" (FiBL-IFOAM study presented at BIOFACH FAIR February 2015 – Data end of 2013).
TALBORNE ORGANICS facilitates direct employment for about 40 Team Members and creates significant indirect jobs through sales & distribution services, input providers and by supplying organic fertilizer to organic farmers, sports turf industry, retail garden centres, landscapers, herb and essential oils producers. The Company’s "Growing Together" strategy is to become nationally represented through additional sales and distribution channels, whilst also developing export opportunities to other African markets.
Jenny adds that "things haven’t been easy. As pioneers in an Industry you don’t make money for a long time and sacrifice much as profits are re-invested for further growth and market development". Our daughter Claire says, "it is not only about the money you make, in life it is rewarding to know that as an entrepreneurial family business we are contributing directly to the health of people through nutritious food, the health of our environment, and the international competitiveness of Southern Africa’s Organic farmers". Talborne Organics is a "Proudly SA" Company.
